We’re told that pride is a sin but from my point of view pride is simply putting your best foot forward and showing the world what you have to offer in the most attractive way possible. Most people take pride in their appearance and their home so why is there a gap with business owners not taking pride in their website and business images?

Appearance Is Everything

Let me backtrack a little with an example of why your business needs to always look its best…

My wife and I were recently at Barangaroo enjoying some time away from the kids on an overnight city break. We decided to go out for dinner but we didn’t really know what we wanted to eat or where so we decided to wander and see what caught our eye.

Having had no recommendations from friends nor reading any online reviews beforehand, the only thing we had to go on was appearance; the signage and décor of the restaurant and looking at what other diners were eating.

My wife and I definitely weren’t going to choose somewhere that didn’t look appealing. The same goes for images on your website. Imagine what message your images convey to customers… Are they immediately impressed and stop to look around or do they think ‘meh’ and move on?

Take pride in your photos! A job well done is a meaningful accomplishment.

I meet a number of people/clients who aren’t proud of their images or their company or their website. They either have a selection of do-it-yourself images that they have taken on their iPhone that lack quality or they have some stock/supplier images that lack consistency. Add in images that are out of date and simply unappealing to the target audience and you end up with a marketing mess.

Don’t get me wrong, I know you work hard to deliver the best product or service possible, but in the same way that I can’t knit a jumper, if you can’t create and maintain excellent images you’re doing a real disservice to your brand and business.

So, just take a moment to really think…

Are you truly proud of your images and what they’re representing?

If not, I would suggest you take some time today to take a good look at how you can bring your imagery up to scratch. Look at what your competitors are doing. See which images grab your attention.

It’s no coincidence that big brands spend an absolute fortune on their imagery. They don’t spend all that money just because it’s available to them. They spend it because they know it brings them in millions of dollars in sales in return for their investment.

The Bigger Picture

It doesn’t stop at images, you also need to take an honest look at your:

  • Website Design
  • Brochure Design
  • Business Cards
  • Storefront Design
  • Sales Staff Uniform

Consider this:

  • Does your online branding match your offline branding?
  • Do your images convey your brand message clearly and professionally?
  • Are your images making people stop to learn more / see more?

If you just answered yes, yes, and yes with a happy smile on your face and you’re feeling really proud of what you see, congratulations! You’re doing a pretty good job, keep doing what you’re doing! If you’re not feeling so confident don’t worry…

Your mistakes don’t define your character. It’s what you do after you have made the mistake that makes all the difference.
